Mr. May sure is a high roller with that fancy flying contraption of his. In fact, the painstaking reporting of the Mail sold him short. He has in fact publicly owned/flown three aircraft! Lets take a deeper look at this publicly funded extravagance. It’s about time oppo had some hot G650 action.
Aircraft the First:
A Luscombe 8 Silvaire (the “luxury” version), an awkward looking tail dragger designed in 1937. Seen here being on some grass:
The Silvaire version is notable for having been sold with full color advertising ! Luscombe was also well known for not using wood. Impressive. This singular piece of classic flying luxury can only be had if the owner has deep enough pockets to shell out... !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Also known as, the price of a decent high performance german saloon car.
Other notable owners include, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , only James May. Quote:
Famous Owners
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of BBC’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! wrote in Top Gear Magazine in 2007 about his 1946 model Luscombe 8A ownership experience. After a temporary loss of power in flight of the meticulously maintained aircraft he concluded in a tongue-in-cheek manner, “All this old stuff is rubbish. None of it works properly. After almost a whole day of fart-arsing around with machinery, I was forced to conclude that the only dependable things in my life are an Italian car and a British motorcycle.”
Aircraft the Second:
An American Champion 8KCAB Super Decathlon, tail number G-OCOK. Oh, Cock. It’s the sports model. First produced in 1970, it is unusual in being a thing owned by James May that is younger than James May. It makes up for this with wooden wing spars.
Pictured above being a stock photo, the Decathlon slides right on in with Mr. May’s Ferraris in the things more capable than their owner category, as it has the ability to withstand real aerobatic G forces and comfortably fly inverted. This race car for the sky demands an even greater premium than the Luscombe, with well maintained used models approaching secondhand !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
[Insert DeMuro joke here]
Aircraft the Third:
A Cessna 182, that appeared in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Top Gear film in which it lost to James May’s lack of IFR training and also an orangutan in a Bugatti. Famous for being slightly bigger than the Cessna 172, the 182 is the Camry of general aviation.
Seen above having James May in it, the Cessna 182 features wheels, wings, an engine, four seats (with optional child Hammond seats in the baggage area), and the anonymity of being one of more than 23,000 produced between 1956 and now.
Notable owners include every flight school ever and my high school pre-calc teacher. Once again, this fine piece of engineering can only be had for the staggeringly large some of money of... around !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Conclusion
As usual, the Daily Mail is 100% not exaggerating or obfuscating or doing anything but relating the absolute facts. James May does indeed own, and fly, airplanes. Most likely, he flies these under a private pilot license. Private plane!
I assume the term ‘high roller’ used in the headline is meant to refer to how tall Jeremy is, and how high in the sky James and Hammond go in their aviational machinery. Because how on earth would the Mail, a well respected paper of record, go out of it’s way to make Top Gear , their greatest friends in the world, look bad!
That would be...

Should have stopped at the Super Dec. I thought he did things properly.

I always liked those. In fact they’re all good planes. Just not aircraft typically associated with high rollers haha

Presenters of a show with a multinational audience totalling over several hundred million dollars, having lots of money?! Shocking.

I enjoy James May’s other programs as well - I think he’s an enjoyable TV host in general. Toy Stories was a great program which brought back a lot of childhood memories. Oz and James Drink to Britain and the one where they go to wine regions as well were funny just because James was actually the uncultured lout in contrast to Oz' prim-and-proper personality; normally we only see James as the prim-and-proper personality on Top Gear compared to the silliness of the other two.

Cap’n slow is secretly the most interesting top gear host by far.
